Craft Club at the Peace Oak is buzzing with activities and this week artists of the Nature Recovery Network will be there finishing off their community arts project with a weaving and printing workshop run by artist and tutor Alice Davies.

Craft Club was set up by Willow Coppice and David Knight Spoon Carving so we can all enjoy making things in a relaxed environment this summer. Crafting activities this Thursday include a hand spinning session. David, Jane and Linda will guide you how to use drop spinners to hand spin wool from sheep fleece, especially collected from herds used in nature conservation grazing. This is such a wonderful and mindful activity. Please drop davidknight5@mac.com an email with the title  ’spinning’ to check if there is a space to join in with this ancient, peaceful and sustainable craft. Please bring some cash for a material donation if you're joining for week 2 of this tutor group.

Next we are very excited to welcome back incredibly talented multi-disciplinary artist Cassy Healey who will be leading a course making flower presses.

Who hasn’t wished that a bunch of flowers would last for ever? Most of us enjoy flowers! Every flower serves as a memory of a season or a specific time and this workshop will help you make them last a little longer. Cassy Healey will be back to help you create your own large wooden flower press to take away.

If you would like to make your own flower press, please email Charlotte at willowcoppice@gmail.com with the subject ‘flower press’. Please email before 2pm on Wednesday to secure your place so that we can prepare the correct amount of material. Please bring some cash to cover the fees, which are £5 donation to the Peace Oak for hosting  us, and £5 material free to cover the cost of the materials you’ll use. As ever, tutors are donating their time for free so we can run these incredible courses this summer.

As well as spinning and flower presses workshops we also have an NRN community arts project. Following on from last Saturday’s nature weaving and printing workshop another opportunity to create artwork celebrating Nature Recovery Network and the Peace Oak for an Exhibition called  "From the Ground Up: Stories of Climate Action" which will run at the Old Fire Station in Oxford from 27 August to 9 October 2021. Led by artist and tutor Alice Walker, participants will be weaving in willow hoops and printing on paper and clay using natural materials. This collective artwork is is open to all and there is no need to book, just come along and be involved in creating this unique piece of art! You may have already read about this wonderful project coordinated by Sue Raikes, which stitches together poetry, climate action and community engagement.

As if that wasn't already enough, craftivist Helena and The Stitches for Survival group, a group of knitters, crocheters, stitchers and textile artists from across the UK and beyond, are making a one-and-a-half mile long scarf with a message to the COP26 climate talks to be held in Glasgow this November. The length of the scarf represents the 1.5°C target in the Paris Agreement. They have been making some incredible quilting, knitting and embroidery panels, it's not too late to get stuck in to have fun contributing to this fantastic cause!

And as ever do come and join with your own craft activity, or just come and chat, you will be very welcome. There's always lots of other informal stuff going on and the need to chop up firewood and tend to the campfire!

Craft Club is open to all Peace Oak orchard members and their guests, including children over the age of 14. For more info contact Charlotte at  willowcoppice@gmail.com

We hope to see you at the orchard on Thursday eve!
